Travel is not something we've done a whole heap of recently, but travel is increasingly one of the most impactive drivers of form that we see in the data. Both negative and positive. When we saw the world unlock a little bit it was a big positive, as we feel that we can go away and go on holiday. But business travel is a strong negative driver and the stress of travel can be a driver when we're traveling for business too. 

 

Let's talk about Travel

  • Travel can be good. It can be really positive. It can be something to look forward to.

  • The idea of going to a destination, where we're going to be inspired, where we're going to experience, or where we're going to connect with family

  • It’s a time we are taking a break from our work and recharging. 

  • Think about where you can travel to locally to experience something new.  There are lots of amazing things to see in your home country

 

And let's talk about Business Travel 

  • Business travel can definitely have a negative effect on our mental health and wellbeing. 

  • We can experience problems with sleep due to different time zones and being out of our routine. Selfcare can be much more difficult to practice. 

  • We tend to be a bit more undisciplined. Indulging in rich food and alcohol much more when we're traveling on business. 

  • We're often packing a huge amount of work into a short amount of time, with removal of the grounding and positive effects of social connections we get from being at home. 

 

Mitigating the negative effects of business travel:

  • When it comes to your wellbeing, try to keep as much of your routine possible, particularly exercise.

  • Think about being disciplined about your food.

  • Think about trying to do some normal things while you're away. Try to just schedule a little bit of time that you can switch off from work and perhaps take in the sites. Go to a gallery, or go for a bike ride or walk, that will leave you feeling enriched and have stories to tell, that are not about business. 

  • Stay hydrated, particularly when we're on a plane traveling long-haul.

  • Think about your alcohol consumption. 

  • Think about traveling by train and be mindful about it. Listen to an audiobook. Leave business aside for a bit. 

  •  Prioritise your sleep.
